MAUI BALLET
About Maui Ballet
Maui Ballet was born from the idea to support young dancers on Maui in unique ways during the Covid-19 pandemic. As 2020 spring performances were cancelled across the globe, young artists were unable to showcase their work for live audiences, leaving them with unfulfilled dreams.
Traveling to Maui weekly for over 27 years offering her expertise in training and choreography, Virginia Holte has both a long history in classical ballet, and love for the Maui dance community. As the founder and artistic director of West Hawaii Dance Theatre & Academy on the Big Island, she founded Maui Ballet as a way to keep classical ballet alive, even through the pandemic.
Maui Ballet is now a thriving non-profit that now offers ongoing weekly classes for all ages. They recently just put on their first showcase, which included excerpts from Don Quixote. They just opened a new studio in Makawao, Maui!
Taking donations from City Ballet School San Francisco, we were able to donate a substantial amount of clothing to Maui Ballet. These donations included new pointe shoes, leotards of all colors, dance bags, leg warmers, and even new tights. We met up with a teacher at Maui Ballet, Ms. Marisa, to hand off the clothing. She was able to show us around their studios, and give us a tour of the place they were currently in. We were able to learn a lot about Maui Ballet and what a good school + mission they are on.
